Assassin’s Creed: Kassandra’s (Or Alexios’s) Odyssey.

We now go back centuries to the 400s BC. During the Persian invasion of Greece, Leonidas holds off the Persian advance. You know the story, it was a popular movie a decade and a half ago! Plus, it really happened (although with some dramatic embellishments for the adaptations of course).

Except in this version, Leonidas has the help of a powerful lance.

Eventually Leonidas’s daughter Myrinne gets the spear and prepares to pass it to her children, Kassandra and Alexios. However, she is told her children would become a great danger by an oracle, and reluctantly they are sacrificed by their father, thrown off a cliff.

However, both children survive (Perhaps due to some Isu DNA in their ancestry), although their destiny goes along a different path. You can choose to be either, although ‘canonically’ the protagonist is Kassandra; and her brother, Alexios, becomes Deimos, who does the dirty work of the mysterious Cult of Kosmos (Who are, of course, like the later Order of the Ancients, an old variation of the Templars). Or Alexios becomes the “Mithios” mercenary and Kassandra becomes Deimos, either way

Kassandra grows up to be a mercenary at the height of the Peloponessian War, where the Greek city-states fought each other (and of course, like in all the games, the proto-Templars are largely pulling the strings). Eventually, her taking on a contract involves her into a reunion with her estranged family, including Deimos. Their fate is largely up to the player, as unlike other entries in the series, AC Odyssey used branching dialogue that can guide the story’s twists and turns, much like THE WITCHER 3, so in other words this is probably the first truly non-linear game in the series. Along the way, she encounters many ancient Greek historical celebrities, much like the other games- Akibiadies, Hippocrates, Kleon, Socrates, and Herodotus. Oh yeah, the lost city of Atlantis naturally shows up too! There’s also multiple romance options in the game as well. You can even fight for different factions in the war, in part by raiding bases or large-scale fights.

Gameplay is similar to ORIGINS, although of course with the branching dialogue and less of a fixed story of course. The story is further tied into AC lore with the expansions, LEGACY OF THE HIDDEN BLADE (Which connects Kassandra more closely to the overall story of the franchise/assasin lineage and links to ORIGINS) and THE FATE OF ATLANTIS (Which brings the Isu more strongly into the story, and explains part of their eventual downfall, as Kassandra goes through the Greek heaven, hell, and city of Atlantis; it’s somewhat similar to ORIGINS in that sense). The main difference to the gameplay is that once again the series makes heavy use of seafaring, similar to BLACK FLAG and ROGUE, although naturally with some less advanced technology.

There’s also a present day story, once again with Layla who has now joined the Assassins and is using the spear and Herodotus’s diary to use the animus to make her live Kassandra (or Alexios’s life)

The game like ORIGINS in particular is an incredibly well-done recreation of the ancient world, and even like ORIGINS comes with a Discovery mode with some historical facts.
